Matakawau Men's Hoodie

MATAKAWAU

"Matakawau," a Māori term, translates to "shag face," combining "Mata" (face) and "Kawau" (shag bird). Located 30km northwest of Waiuku on New Zealand's Awhitu Peninsula, it was historically covered with manuka and fern. From 1865-1930, gum diggers, both European and Māori, inhabited the land. The area also holds the Matakawau war memorial hall, opened in 1950, built with local timber and community support. Today, Matakawau stands as a testament to both cultural heritage and community resilience on the stunning shores of Manukau Harbour.
