GRAHAMS BEACH

The Logan and Graham families embarked on a fateful journey from Port Philip, Melbourne, Australia, aboard the brig Spencer on January 7, 1854. However, tragedy struck as the ship encountered severe weather, leading to a shipwreck on January 13, 1854. Despite the loss of five lives, including Ellen Jane Logan, the survivors, including Edward Logan and William Graham, endured nine days encamped on a nearby beach before rescue. Undeterred, they set sail again on the brig Fire Fly on February 1, 1854, bound for New Zealand.

Upon arrival, the resilient families, saw promise in the Manukau region, captivated by the stunning white sandy beach prompted them to purchase land near Kauri Point in September 1854. William Graham's industrious efforts yielded a flourishing farm by 1857, with extensive planting of potatoes, wheat, and oats to sustain their family and livestock.

His enduring bond with the local Māori during the Waikato War earned him the title of "Father Graham." William passed away in 1889, and the beach was thereafter known as Graham's Beach. Edward Logan's friendship with William endured from the goldfields of Bendigo to their final days. Edward's passing in 1879 marked the end of an era, but the legacies of the Logan and Graham families endure in the history of Awhitu Peninsula.
